Pituitary Tumors: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

The pituitary gland is a small pea-sized gland located at the base of the brain. Despite its small size, it plays a vital role in regulating various hormones responsible for growth, metabolism, reproduction, and overall body functions. A pituitary tumor is an abnormal growth that develops in this gland.

Most pituitary tumors are benign (non-cancerous) and slow-growing. However, they can still affect a person’s health by producing excess hormones or by putting pressure on nearby structures such as the optic nerves, which can lead to vision problems and other neurological symptoms.

What Are Pituitary Tumors?

Pituitary tumors, also known as pituitary adenomas, are among the most common tumors affecting the pituitary gland. They may vary in size and hormone-producing activity.

Based on size, pituitary tumors are classified as:

Microadenomas

These tumors are less than 1 centimeter in size and are often discovered during routine investigations.

Macroadenomas

These tumors are 1 centimeter or larger and may cause symptoms due to pressure on surrounding tissues and nerves.

Based on hormone production, pituitary tumors are classified as:

Functioning Tumors

These tumors produce excessive hormones, leading to hormonal disorders such as:

  • Prolactinoma

  • CushingтАЩs Disease

  • Acromegaly

Non-Functioning Tumors

These tumors do not produce excess hormones but may compress normal pituitary tissue, resulting in hormone deficiencies.

Symptoms of Pituitary Tumors

The symptoms of a pituitary tumor depend on its size and whether it secretes hormones.

Hormonal Symptoms

  • Unexplained weight gain or weight loss

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Mood changes

  • Excessive hair growth

  • Reduced sexual function

Symptoms Due to Tumor Pressure

  • Persistent headaches

  • Blurred vision

  • Double vision

  • Loss of peripheral vision

  • Difficulty concentrating

Larger tumors may also interfere with the normal functioning of the pituitary gland and surrounding brain structures.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of pituitary tumors is not always known. In most cases, these tumors develop due to abnormal growth of pituitary cells. Certain genetic conditions may increase the risk, although most cases occur without a family history.

Diagnosis of Pituitary Tumors

Early diagnosis is important for effective treatment and prevention of complications.

Your doctor may recommend:

  • Detailed neurological examination

  • Hormone blood tests

  • MRI scan of the brain and pituitary gland

  • Vision assessment tests

  • Endocrine evaluation

These investigations help determine the tumor’s size, location, and hormonal activity.

Treatment Options for Pituitary Tumors

Treatment depends on the type, size, and symptoms caused by the tumor.

Medication

Certain hormone-producing tumors, particularly prolactinomas, can often be treated successfully with medications that help reduce hormone levels and shrink the tumor.

Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery

Minimally invasive endoscopic surgery performed through the nose is one of the most advanced and effective treatment options for pituitary tumors. This technique allows surgeons to remove the tumor with minimal discomfort, no external scars, and faster recovery. Endoscopic approaches are commonly used for pituitary and skull-base disorders.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation treatment may be recommended when complete tumor removal is not possible or when residual tumor tissue remains after surgery.

Observation and Follow-Up

Small tumors that do not cause symptoms may only require regular monitoring with MRI scans and hormone testing.

When Should You Consult a Neurosurgeon?

You should seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Persistent headaches

  • Unexplained hormonal changes

  • Vision disturbances

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Symptoms suggestive of pituitary dysfunction

Early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life.

Expert Pituitary Tumor Care

Pituitary tumors require specialized evaluation and treatment by experienced neurosurgeons and endocrine specialists. Advanced diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and personalized treatment plans help achieve the best possible outcomes while preserving normal pituitary function.

LetтАЩs discuss one of the most commonly ignored dental problems тАФ Gum Disease. ЁЯж╖

Did you know that your gums are just as important as your teeth?

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. They support and hold your teeth firmly in place.

When gums become infected or diseased, the supporting bone and tissues around the teeth start getting damaged. Over time, this can cause teeth to become loose and eventually fall out.

This means that even if your teeth are completely healthy and free from cavities, you can still lose them because of gum disease.

Common warning signs:

Bleeding while brushing

Swollen or red gums

Bad breath

Gum recession (gums pulling away from teeth)

Loose teeth

The good news? Gum disease is preventable and treatable when detected early.

Take care of your gums, because healthy gums mean healthy teeth for life!┬а
